Resumption of Consultant talks

We wish to advise that negotiations on a new consultant contract have recommenced.  The process will be chaired by Mr Tom Mallon BL and the IMO, as the trade union representing both current contract holders and NCHDs as future contract holders, are a party to these discussions with the Department of Health and the HSE.

You will be aware of Government announcements in respect of the final phase of pay restoration legislation which is payable for all those earning over €150,000 from 1st July in line with previous agreements and 2017 legislation.  As soon as we receive copies of the relevant circulars and pay scales to give effect to these provisions we will advise members but in any event the restoration is effective from and to be in place from 1st July.

In relation to the additional hours imposed on public servants, including consultants, under the Haddington Road Agreement we have had it confirmed, following strong representation by the IMO  as signatories to Building Momentum that consultants will be included in this process and we will be advising members of the arrangements in this regard shortly.  In effect this is reducing current 39 hour arrangements to 37 hours for the majority of consultants.

As always the IMO and your National Consultants Committee will strongly represent the interests of current and future consultants so as to ensure any contract is capable of addressing the crisis in the medical workforce and aids recruitment.
